A better scale
Describe your response, not a number
Instead of trying to choose a perfect number, describe what your body is doing. Easy breathing and relaxed muscles are more useful cues than tolerating pain.
- Lighter: I am starting to brace
- Same: this feels clear and manageable
- Stop: sharp, burning, electric, numb, or nauseating
During a session
Short sentences work
You do not need a technical explanation. A direct request gives the therapist something they can change immediately.
- Please use less pressure
- Stay at this level
- Move away from that spot
- Please stop the session
Afterward
Do not grade success by soreness
Some people feel temporarily tender, but pain is not required for a useful massage. Worsening or concerning symptoms should not be pushed through.
- Notice how you feel later
- Tell the provider what did not work
- Seek medical guidance for concerning symptoms
