Safety

Sometimes the right massage decision is to wait.

Massage is generally low risk when performed appropriately, but vigorous pressure or certain health circumstances can cause harm. Use this page to choose a safer next step.

Raredoes not mean impossible.

NCCIH reports that harmful effects appear uncommon, but rare serious events have included blood clots, nerve injury, and bone fracture. Some reports involved vigorous massage or people at increased risk of injury.

Waiting for your selection

This tool does not diagnose. If you are unsure, choose the more cautious option.

Pressure

Vigorous is not automatically effective.

A useful session does not require bruising, sharp pain, breath-holding, or pressure you did not agree to.

Heat

Hot stone adds a temperature risk.

Speak up immediately if heat feels uncomfortable. Reduced sensation or other health factors may make heat less appropriate.

Pregnancy

Positioning and health context matter.

ACOG notes side-lying as a preferred massage position during pregnancy. Discuss complications or individual concerns with your prenatal clinician.

Swelling

“Lymphatic” is not a general detox treatment.

Unexplained swelling needs evaluation. Manual lymphatic drainage is a specialized technique used in individualized clinical care, including some lymphedema plans.
