Pause
Stop playing before symptoms become the routine
Set the instrument down, relax the grip, and notice pain, numbness, tingling, weakness, swelling, or loss of coordination. Concerning or persistent symptoms need evaluation.
- Do not play through neurological symptoms
- Loosen the shoulders
- Change technique or workload
Move
Open and close without stretching hard
Use comfortable hand opening, finger movement, forearm rotation, and shoulder rolls. Avoid pulling fingers back aggressively.
- Keep movements small
- Do not force end range
- Breathe normally
Massage
Support the forearm and use the opposite palm
Use slow broad glides through the muscular forearm and palm. Stay away from the elbow crease and stop if symptoms travel into the hand.
- Use less pressure than expected
- Limit the round
- Change practice conditions too
